Dukes Convoy

  1. The first Latin part of the song sounds good for the most part. Once we get into the swing, 17-25 is solid (For people with different music: the first two chords in the swing, Concert F7 and Concert B-flat7) but then for the rest of it the horns don't really have it down (we'll have to practice it). The transition back to the Latin from the swing is kind of off too.

The second Latin part is fine for the most part until 7 measures in when the melody changes from the original melody in the first part of the song. At this part we fall apart a little then get back together.

Lastly my solo needs work. For the most part during the Latin parts I knew what notes to play, just not how to incorporate them into the song, so I will practice that, along with soloing over the swing part.

  2. I actually feel like the second latin part was more solid than the first. But maybe that's just because it takes a little while to get in to the song, I just didnt feel the beginning that much. The feel in the swing section was perfect, I think we all got the hang of Swing by now. The solos were awesome, but I feel like Dom was more comfortable on the latin and Nate on the Swing section. I feel like I've just got to work on my comping during the latin solos a bit and I should start practicing my solos on it. I'm going to put all these songs on my ipod, which I have yet to do, as then I will get more comfortable with them if I hear them more

  3. You are both correct. I think the cohesiveness of the group is affected by the comfort level of the groove. Once we got going (rhythm section), the horn lines fell into place.
Dom had a good solo, really digging into the nonharmonic tones of the altered dominant chord. We need to do something about the Zack Wylde vibrato.
The proper groove will make this song successful.

  4. Zack Wylde vibrato... ouch. But I have no grounds to even say that because it's true. I don't know how to really break out of that because it's something that I don't think about at all. It's mainly me wanting to sustain a note and not being confident that it will stay ringing long enough without some aid.

As far as the solos, I agree with Justin's statement. Although today I was more comfortable on the swing because I didn't try to think too much about the change. When my ears anticipate the change it works out better but when my eyes anticipate the change I lose power in my ears which degrades soloing ideas.

  5. If I could hold down any kind of groove at all maybe the song would've gone down a bit smoother... Dom, I looooooooved how at the end of the swing section (intentionally or not) it sort of sounded like you were melding the swing and latin sections and it was cool.

Nate your solo vibrato at parts (or whatever you do on a sax to make it sound vibrato-y) was cool in the latin sections.

lol at Zack Wylde vibrato comment!

  6. The intro was somewhat shaky... And then the transition back into the second Latin section was kind of rough. Dom I loved your solo. Nate I loved yours too especially since it was so different from Dom's. And the vibrato part that Zach was talking about I think it was a trill? Either way I agree it sounded good. Back into the Latin after the solo was a little slow too. I have to work on the bongo part for the swing because I did not enjoy that at all.

  7. We were a bit shaky at the start but a bit in we caught our footing and by the swing we were pretty tight. The solos were pretty shaky. We need to have a stronger entrance and ending after the solos.

  8. The vibrato thing was mentioned above a few times, so I thought I'd readdress it. It's stylistically incorrect. In other words, it's not a jazz thing to do. It's not a melodic problem (musicians use vibrato all the time) but a wide vibrato like that is contextually out of place for this style of music. just like you wouldn't put hot fudge on a pizza. There's nothing wrong with either one of them, just not together. If you decide you like hot fudge on pizza, then good for you. You have created a new style.
